Nguyễn Thùy Linh maintains a high ranking on the world badminton leaderboard

Nguyễn Thùy Linh and Vũ Thị Trang each secured their spots in the second round of the 2025 World Badminton Championships, bringing encouraging signs for badminton in Vietnam.

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) released the rankings on August 26, showing that Vietnam’s top player Nguyễn Thùy Linh remains steady at 22nd in the women’s singles. This continues to be her highest ranking this year, unchanged after her start at the 2025 World Championships in France.

Although she did not improve her ranking this week, Nguyễn Thùy Linh made a significant impact on the court. In the first round, the Phú Thọ native surprisingly defeated the 10th seed, Ratchanok Intanon, a former world champion from Thailand, with a 2-0 score.

This victory not only secured her place in the second round but is also expected to help Thùy Linh gain ranking points next week, bringing her closer to the world’s top 20 players.

On the same day, experienced player Vũ Thị Trang also made her mark by advancing past the first round in women’s singles. After just 30 minutes, she defeated Yevheniia Kantemyr from Ukraine 2-0, with set scores of 22-20 and 21-8. This win is especially meaningful for Vũ Thị Trang, as it marks her return to the World Championships after several years.

In the BWF rankings, Vũ Thị Trang currently stands at 172nd after dropping two places, but her impressive performance is expected to boost her confidence and improve her results in the near future.

With these outcomes, Vietnamese women’s badminton has two effective competitors at this year’s world event. Nguyễn Thùy Linh has confirmed her status as the number one player, while Vũ Thị Trang demonstrated the experience and resilience of a seasoned athlete. Both will proceed to the second round in the upcoming matches, promising more surprises for fans.

In men’s doubles, Vietnam also had a strong start. The pair Nguyễn Đình Hoàng and Trần Đình Mạnh defeated their Brazilian opponents in the opening match to advance to the second round.
