Today, the San Francisco Giants chose to send pitcher Kai-Wei Teng down to Triple-A, marking the end of his brief major league tenure. Outfielder Grant McCray was optioned alongside him.
Teng was promoted to the majors on the 2nd of this month, making his first start by pitching 3.1 innings and giving up 5 runs. In his next appearance, he delivered the best performance of his career, pitching 5 scoreless innings in relief, extinguishing a bases-loaded threat, and showing great composure. With support from his teammates' offense, he earned the win, which was also his first major league victory.
Unfortunately, in the following two starts, although Teng demonstrated good pitching skills, bad luck and control issues led to him allowing 7 runs in 1.2 innings and 3 runs in 3.1 innings respectively, resulting in him being pulled from the games early.
This season, Teng appeared in 4 games, recording a 1-3 win-loss record with an 8.78 ERA. Over 13.1 innings pitched, he struck out 12 batters but also issued 9 walks and hit 3 batters with pitches.
With the San Francisco Giants' chances of securing a National League wild card spot slim, manager Melvin recently revealed plans to prepare for next season early by giving rookies major league experience. Starting September 1st (U.S. time), teams can expand their active rosters by two players. It remains uncertain whether Teng will be recalled in September following this demotion.
