The New York Yankees once again faced the Boston Red Sox at home in their ongoing rivalry. Starter Max Fried threw six scoreless innings, but after his departure, the Red Sox penetrated the Yankees bullpen. The Yankees could only muster three scattered hits and were retired in order from the 3rd through the 9th innings. Ultimately, the Yankees were shut out 0-1, losing their second straight game in the rivalry.
Fried only recorded three up, three down innings in the 2nd and 6th frames. The Red Sox had runners in scoring position in the 1st, 3rd, and 5th innings but failed to capitalize. A brief interruption occurred in the top of the 4th when a squirrel ran onto the field near the mound during Fried’s at-bat against Red Sox rookie Jhostynxon Garcia, making his major league debut at Yankee Stadium. Garcia drew a walk but was left stranded on base.
Fried finished six innings throwing 99 pitches, 63 of which were strikes. He struck out seven, walked three, allowed four hits, and did not give up a run. This was his first quality start in August over four appearances and the only game without allowing a run during that span.
The Yankees offense was stifled by three Red Sox pitchers, striking out nine times and managing only three scattered hits without a single opportunity with runners in scoring position. From the 3rd through the 9th innings, the Yankees went 21 up and 21 down. The Red Sox scored the game’s only run in the top of the 7th inning after Nathaniel Lowe and Connor Wong hit back-to-back doubles with one out, securing a 1-0 shutout and their second consecutive win in the rivalry.
This year, the Yankees have only won the first game against the Red Sox and have since lost seven straight, including today. Boone said, "I don’t like losing to them, I don’t like losing to anyone. You never like losing to the Red Sox. They’ve had the upper hand on us lately, but tomorrow we have a chance to change that.”
After posting a 6.80 ERA over his last eight starts, Yankees starter Max Fried made significant adjustments today, drastically reducing his cutter usage—which had been targeted by opponents recently—and relying more on his sinker, which proved effective. He pitched six innings with seven strikeouts, three walks, four hits allowed, and no runs given up.
However, Red Sox starter Brayan Bello also delivered a strong performance, pitching seven scoreless innings with five strikeouts, one walk, and only three hits allowed. Along with two relievers, he combined to shut out the Yankees. The Red Sox offense quickly struck after Fried left the game, scoring a run in the top of the 7th inning on consecutive doubles by Lowe and Wong, which secured their narrow victory.
This was Bello’s fifth career start at Yankee Stadium, where he has pitched a total of 31.1 innings with an ERA of just 1.45. He said, "Yeah, I really enjoy pitching here. The mound feels great to me."
