At the Padres' home stadium, facing off against the Dodgers for the NL West top spot, the Padres once again dominated the Dodgers' offense in the second game today. With just five total hits between both teams, the Padres won 5-1, claiming back-to-back wins and ascending to the exclusive lead in the NL West.
Last year in the World Series opener, Nestor Cortes was on the receiving end of Freddie Freeman's unprecedented walk-off grand slam. Today, Cortes retired 16 consecutive batters after the start, until Miguel Rojas hit the Dodgers' first hit with one out in the top of the sixth inning. Cortes finished with six innings pitched, three strikeouts, no walks, only one hit allowed, and no runs given up.
Dodgers starter Tyler Glasnow exited after just four innings. Although he struck out three batters, he issued four walks, two of which came in the bottom of the fourth inning, allowing the Padres to load the bases with no outs. Ramon Laureano then hit a ground ball single to right field that scored two runs, followed by a sacrifice fly from Jake Cronenworth that brought in another run, resulting in Glasnow giving up three runs. After throwing 83 pitches over four innings, he left the game.
Despite Alex Freeland hitting his second career home run as a pinch hitter in the top of the eighth inning to score one run for the Dodgers, the Padres responded in the bottom of the eighth with two walks and one hit to score two more runs and extend their lead. Ultimately, the Dodgers lost by four runs.
The Dodgers managed only two hits throughout the game. Freeland, who hit his first career starting home run yesterday, followed up with a solo homer for two runs over these two games combined, which accounted for the Dodgers’ only runs in a series where they totaled just five hits.
Shohei Ohtani went 0-for-4 today with one strikeout. Before August, he posted a slash line of .385/.512/.754 over 18 games, but after resting one day, he went hitless in seven at-bats with two strikeouts across these two games against the Padres.
