Prior to today’s matchup with the St. Louis Cardinals, the Pittsburgh Pirates formally reinstated outfielder Oneil Cruz from the concussion list and placed lefty Andrew Heaney on the designated for assignment list.
Additionally, right-handed pitcher Dauri Moreta was recalled today from Triple-A Indianapolis, while outfielder Ronny Simon was optioned down following yesterday’s game.
“Andrew Heaney’s decade of major league experience is no accident,” said Pirates manager Don Kelly. “He has the ability to pitch at the big league level, which we saw early in the season. He delivered several key starts for us, and although his recent performance declined leading to a bullpen role, he has consistently maintained a professional approach to his daily work.”
In two rehab games at Double-A Altoona, Cruz hit a triple, drove in three runs, drew two walks, stole one base, and scored twice. “We recognize his talent,” Kelly said about Cruz, “he has the ability to change the offensive dynamic every time he steps to the plate.”
Moreta has now played for Pittsburgh twice this season (previously from August 2 to 10). Between August 14 and 24, he appeared in four games for Indianapolis, posting a 1.69 ERA (1 run in 5.1 innings) with nine strikeouts. The rehabilitation assignments for right-hander Justin Lawrence and left-hander Tim Mayza have also moved from Single-A Bradenton to Indianapolis. Currently, the Pirates’ 40-man roster includes 39 players.
