On the 29th, the Philadelphia Phillies took on the Nationals, not only delivering 20 hits but also winning decisively 19-4. The entire team blasted 7 home runs, and Kyle Schwarber was responsible for 4 of them, becoming the 21st player in league history to hit four homers in a single game. Remarkably, he was only missing a grand slam to accomplish the "complete home run cycle."
In the bottom of the first inning, Schwarber came up as the second batter and immediately launched a massive solo home run that soared into the second level of the right-field stands. In the bottom of the second, he came to bat again but flew out on a high fly ball. Then, in the bottom of the fourth, after battling the Nationals' pitcher to a full count, Schwarber hit a ball near the right-field foul pole that landed in fair territory, resulting in a two-run homer.
By the end of the first four innings, the Phillies had already scored 12 runs. In the bottom of the fifth, Schwarber got another chance at bat. Facing a pitch that started as a strike but broke to the right side, he surprisingly pulled off a three-run homer to the opposite field. With just one grand slam away from completing the "complete home run cycle," Schwarber came up again in the bottom of the seventh with two runners on base and still managed to hit another three-run homer to right field. At that point, the Phillies were leading 18-4.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Schwarber had his sixth at-bat of the game but hit a high fly ball to the infield that was caught for an out. All four of Schwarber’s hits in the game were home runs, making him the third player this season and the 21st in history to hit four homers in a single game. He also became the fourth player in Phillies history to accomplish this feat, the previous being Mike Schmidt on April 18, 1976.
