Shohei Ohtani contributed a walk and a hit, but the Dodgers were shut out by the Diamondbacks.

The Los Angeles Dodgers, who had averaged 6.5 runs per game and won four straight games in their first four matches, were held scoreless today. They recorded just three hits and fell 0-3 to the Arizona Diamondbacks, giving the Diamondbacks their third straight victory. This was the Dodgers’ seventh shutout defeat of the season.

Diamondbacks’ starter Zac Gallen had a rough season so far with a 5.13 ERA in his previous 27 outings. However, today he threw 96 pitches over six innings, striking out eight batters, issuing three walks, allowing only two hits, and giving up no runs, completely shutting down the Dodgers’ offense. This earned him his 10th win of the season (against 13 losses) and marked only his second scoreless start this year.

The Dodgers’ best scoring chance came in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two outs, Mookie Betts hit a double, but in one of only two times Dodgers had runners in scoring position all game, after Freddie Freeman was walked, Will Smith’s fly ball near the left-field home run wall was caught for an out.

The Dodgers managed just three hits and drew four walks in the entire game. Besides Ohtani’s single with two outs in the third inning and Andy Pages’ single with two outs in the seventh, no other rallies materialized. Ohtani went 1-for-3 with a walk but was unable to help the Dodgers secure a win.

Dodgers’ starter Blake Snell pitched 5.1 innings, striking out eight and walking three, while allowing four hits. He gave up a two-run homer to Blaze Alexander in the top of the fourth and left the game after the top of the sixth, when the first three batters reached base and scored one run. Those three runs resulted in his third loss of the season (with three wins). Since returning from the injured list, Snell has pitched at least five innings in all five appearances, allowing no more than three runs each time, but has lost every game in which he surrendered any runs.

Although the Diamondbacks only recorded four hits, they scored three runs to win the game. Star outfielder Corbin Carroll went 1-for-4 with two strikeouts. After hitting a double to start the top of the sixth inning, he scored the team’s third run. Over his last 12 games, Carroll has posted an OPS of 0.940, and his season OPS currently stands at 0.875.
