Aroldis Chapman, coming off the best season of his career with the Red Sox, is set to stay with the club.
According to a source speaking to MLB.com today, Chapman has agreed to extend his contract with Boston. The agreement includes the 2026 season and mutual options for 2027, but the team has not yet confirmed the deal.
The 37-year-old Chapman posted a career-low ERA of 1.04 this season, striking out 74 batters over 52 innings. He converted 26 saves out of 28 opportunities for the Red Sox. After pitching 61.1 innings with a 3.79 ERA for the Pirates in 2024, he experienced a strong resurgence this season.
This veteran, with 16 seasons of experience, has accumulated 361 career saves, ranking 13th all-time. Last December, Chapman signed a one-year deal with the Red Sox. He quickly established himself as a vital part of the bullpen, which is led by former starter Garrett Whitlock, 2024 Rule 5 draft pick Justin Slaten, and veteran lefty Justin Wilson.
With Chapman anchoring the back end, the Red Sox bullpen posted a 3.41 ERA, the lowest in the American League and third-best in MLB. In 2024, Boston's relievers had a 4.39 ERA, ranking 24th in the majors.
Currently, the Red Sox sit third in the AL East—3.5 games behind division-leading Blue Jays—and hold the second AL wild card spot, aiming for their first playoff appearance since 2021. Due to Chapman's success, the team opted to secure the left-hander for at least one more year—possibly two—rather than letting him enter free agency after the 2025 season.
The 2026 season will mark Chapman’s 17th year in the major leagues. The left-hander has played for the Reds, Yankees, Cubs, Royals, Rangers, Pirates, and now the Red Sox.
