In the opening game of a home series against the Toronto Blue Jays, the New York Yankees saw just two players reach base through six innings, relying on Giancarlo Stanton's solo home run for their only run. However, despite three hits combined in the bottom halves of the 7th and 8th innings, the Yankees failed to score. In the bottom of the 9th, Stanton delivered a walk-off double play hit, bringing in the team's only run, but the Yankees ultimately fell 1-7 to the Blue Jays.
The Yankees went down in order in their first four at-bats. In the bottom of the 2nd inning, with one out and a full count, Stanton swung at a 97 mph four-seam fastball on the inside corner, sending it over the left-field wall for his 19th home run of the season, giving the Yankees their first run though they trailed 1-4. Since returning from injury, Stanton has hit 19 homers in 59 games and is on pace to hit at least 20 homers for the fifth consecutive season.
After Stanton’s homer, the Yankees’ lineup went 11 up, 11 down until the bottom of the 6th inning when the leadoff batter drew a walk, ending the scoring drought, only to be followed by another quick three outs. In the bottom of the 7th, Aaron Judge led off with a hit, and after one out, Stanton added his second hit of the game. The Yankees reached the scoring position for the first time in the game but left runners stranded.
