The Dodgers have placed rookie catcher/first baseman Dalton Rushing on the 10-day injured list today because of a right calf bruise, but right-handed starter Tyler Glasnow (back tightness) will not be sidelined.
Chuckie Robinson’s contract was selected from Triple-A Oklahoma City, and he will join the Dodgers in Baltimore today.
In yesterday’s 1-2 loss to the Orioles, Rushing immediately went down in the sixth inning after being hit on the inner lower area of his right knee by a foul ball, limping off the field with his arm resting on manager Dave Roberts and a team medical staff member.
After the game, the catcher was seen using crutches, and today in the clubhouse, his right leg was wrapped with a compression sleeve. Both yesterday’s X-rays and today’s CT scan came back negative.
“I really didn’t know what was going on at the time; I’ve never been hit that high on the leg by a ball before,” Rushing said today. “But it was definitely scary. I thought I might have broken something.”
The Dodgers already had three catchers on the roster, but among them, three-time All-Star Will Smith suffered a right hand contusion after being hit by a foul ball in Thursday’s game against the Pirates and is currently day-to-day. Roberts said he expects the veteran won’t be available until at least next Monday.
“Dalton tried to get some activity in today,” Roberts said. “But… this is going to be a three, four, maybe five-day situation. So it made sense to put him on the injured list just in case.”
Rushing’s batting line over 45 games is .190/.254/.298. He has caught in 35 of those games, starting 33 times behind the plate.
The 30-year-old Robinson has appeared in 51 major league games in his career, most recently with the White Sox last season. This year, he has played 74 games between two Triple-A teams, hitting .264/.333/.372.
After being removed from the starting rotation yesterday due to back tightness, Glasnow will see doctors in Los Angeles today.
“It’s nothing serious, so I think we dodged a bullet,” Roberts said. “He was throwing today, so we expect to have him back in the starting rotation soon.”
Glasnow pitched seven innings in last Sunday’s start against the Diamondbacks, matching his season high. Roberts said Glasnow was originally still scheduled to pitch, but the back tightness that began Friday night persisted through Saturday.
Although Glasnow has only won one of his 14 starts this year, his pitching has been solid since returning from right shoulder inflammation on July 9, posting a 3.02 ERA with 58 strikeouts over 50.2 innings in nine starts.
