Phillies' Turner and Bohm placed on injured list, both expected to return before playoffs

With only three weeks left before the playoffs, the Phillies, who lead the National League East, are dealing with injuries to important players. The team confirmed that starting shortstop Trea Turner and third baseman Alec Bohm have been added to the injured list.

Turner is one of the main contributors to the Phillies' offense this season. His .305 batting average currently ranks among the best in the National League. Turner suffered a right hamstring strain during the 7th inning running bases against the Miami Marlins yesterday. He missed six weeks last year due to a hamstring strain as well, but that was diagnosed as a grade 2 injury, whereas this time it is a milder grade 1 strain. Manager Rob Thomson stated, "We expect him to return before the playoffs, so the situation is actually better than we initially thought."

Bohm was placed on the injured list due to inflammation in his left shoulder. Thomson mentioned that Bohm has been experiencing shoulder discomfort for some time, but he is expected to return once his 10-day injured list period ends. This season, Bohm has posted a .272/.319/.384 slash line with a wRC+ of 94.

Although the Phillies currently hold a 7-game lead over the second-place New York Mets in the National League East, they are the second-best division-leading team in the league, only ahead of the Los Angeles Dodgers by 4 games. If the Dodgers surpass them in the final three weeks, the Phillies would have to start the playoffs in the Wild Card round. Turner’s 125 wRC+ ranks third on the team among players with over 110 plate appearances, behind Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper. Combined with his excellent baserunning and above-average defense at shortstop, FanGraphs calculates that he has contributed 6.6 more wins than a replacement-level player, second in the National League only to Shohei Ohtani.
