Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Emmet Sheehan started today’s game, throwing seven innings with 10 strikeouts and no runs allowed. Yet, after his departure, the bullpen encountered difficulties, resulting in the Dodgers losing 3-1 at home to the San Francisco Giants and missing the chance to sweep the series.
Sheehan maintained his excellent form from the last two games, in which he pitched 12.2 innings with 16 strikeouts, allowing only four hits and two runs. Tonight, he completed seven innings using just 84 pitches, matching his career-high 10 strikeouts in a single game. He also hit two batters, gave up only one hit overall, and never let the Giants reach second base. After hitting a batter to start the third inning, he retired 15 consecutive hitters without giving up any runs.
However, the game took a turn after Sheehan left. Blake Treinen immediately gave up three consecutive hits to the Giants, allowing them to tie the game. With one out, he intentionally walked Rafael Devers, then also walked Willy Adames, handing the Giants the go-ahead run. Finally, Matt Chapman hit a slow ground ball, and the Dodgers failed to complete a double play, allowing the Giants to add an insurance run. The Dodgers ultimately lost by two runs.
This marks the third time in his last seven appearances that Treinen has allowed three runs in a single game. During this stretch, he has pitched 5.1 innings, striking out only three but issuing nine walks (including four intentional), giving up six hits and 11 runs, with an ERA soaring to 15.19.
The Dodgers recorded seven hits in total, two more than the Giants, but managed to score only one run. Leadoff hitter Shohei Ohtani had one hit in four at-bats, extending his hitting streak to nine games, though he also struck out twice.
