Los Angeles Angels pitcher Yusei Kikuchi posted on his personal video channel after the season concluded, showing an interview from his final regular-season start and revealing that the air conditioning in the Angels' training room had remained unrepaired throughout the entire season, which drew attention from fans in the U.S.
On September 25th, pitching at home against the Kansas City Royals, Kikuchi started and pitched 5 innings, giving up just one hit and one run while striking out six, maintaining a steady performance. After the game, he told Japanese media that he felt somewhat dehydrated early on but was able to rehydrate in time, so it didn’t affect him much.
Regarding the cause of his dehydration, Kikuchi laughed and said it was because the training room had no air conditioning, and he warmed up while drenched in sweat. “I hope they fix it soon. This problem has lasted for a whole year. The season is almost over, yet we still have to train in a place without air conditioning, which is really bad for the body.”
These remarks sparked discussions among American fans, with many joking, “This is probably the least surprising Angels news.” Some fans recalled that Oakland Athletics players once complained about having to pay out of pocket for drinks from vending machines at home. Others pointed out that former Angels pitcher C.J. Wilson revealed the team’s treadmill was bought by Albert Pujols himself because the organization considered it too expensive to purchase.
Yusei Kikuchi signed a 3-year, $63.675 million contract with the Angels at the end of last year. This year was the first year of the deal, during which he made 33 starts, pitched a personal best of 178.1 innings, averaging 8.8 strikeouts and 3.7 walks per 9 innings, with an ERA of 3.99.
