San Diego Padres head coach announces retirement after first-round exit

Mike Shildt, aged 57, who has guided the San Diego Padres to at least 90 wins in back-to-back seasons, was defeated by the Los Angeles Dodgers in last year’s second playoff round and was knocked out in the first round this year after a hard-fought three-game series. The Padres today formally revealed that Shildt has chosen to retire and step down from his head coaching role.

According to A.J. Cassavell of MLB.com, sources revealed that Shildt informed the team of his retirement decision two days ago, and the announcement was made official today. In an open letter to the San Diego media, Shildt expressed that the long season had taken a toll on him mentally and physically.

“With a heavy yet grateful heart, I announce my retirement and resignation as the head coach of the San Diego Padres,” Shildt wrote. “This decision began forming during the season, and over the past ten days, I have come to accept it mentally.”

He stated, “I have poured all my energy into fulfilling the late owner Peter Seidler’s vision of bringing a championship to San Diego. Although we didn’t achieve the ultimate goal, I am immensely proud of the players, coaching staff, and the entire team’s accomplishments over the past two seasons.”

“The exhaustion from the long season has placed immense pressure on me mentally, physically, and emotionally. While I have always prioritized serving others, now is the time to think about myself and say goodbye in my own way,” Shildt said.

Shildt never played in the major or minor leagues; his coaching career began as a college assistant coach and high school head coach. In 2004, he joined the St. Louis Cardinals as a scout and later coached extensively within their minor league system. In 2018, he was promoted from bench coach to head coach, marking his first time leading a major league team.

During his more than three years with the Cardinals, Shildt compiled a 252-199 record. In 2021, after leading the team to 90 wins but losing the Wild Card game to the defending champion Dodgers, he was dismissed due to “philosophical differences.” He then joined the Padres as a consultant and was appointed head coach at the end of 2023. Over two years, he led the team to a 183-141 record, with a career six-season winning percentage of 56.1%. Now, after 34 years of coaching, this veteran leader chooses to leave the game with joy.

“For the past 34 years, I have dedicated my life to coaching. Looking back, I can say I accomplished two things: helping players develop their talents and grow into better people, and winning games,” Shildt wrote.
