Nolan Arenado explained in an interview why he declined a trade to the Houston Astros last year.

Nolan Arenado recently described his decision not to exercise his no-trade clause and agree to a trade to the Arizona Diamondbacks as an "effortless choice," primarily because the team is near his hometown and boasts a youthful, talented roster. "I'm from Orange County, California, so it's very convenient," he said recently. "I have family in Arizona, and I really like this team. They are a strong squad, full of energy and competitive spirit. But I truly believe I can help this team win and contribute meaningfully. Clearly, being around talented, young, and hungry players keeps me mentally fresh as well."

In December 2024, Arenado used his no-trade clause to block a potential trade from the St. Louis Cardinals to the Houston Astros. About 13 months later, he revealed in an interview today the reasons behind vetoing that deal. "I have the utmost respect for Houston, and I've said that many times," Arenado said on the 'Foul Territory' show. "They traded away Kyle Tucker, and Alex Bregman wasn’t returning... There were many factors that made me hesitate. I respect all the players there and the team—they are outstanding."

"But I have a family, and I had to make a decision based on that. It wasn’t an easy choice, but in the end, I made it." In the 2025 season, Arenado played the entire year with the Cardinals, hitting 12 home runs in 107 games, with a career-low OPS of 0.666. However, he believes he can return to All-Star form with the Diamondbacks.

“Obviously, I was dealing with some injuries and other issues at the time, but I think the adjustments I’m currently trying—including changes discussed with the hitting coach—will have a positive impact moving forward,” he added.
