Jung Jong-chul faces multiple DFAs with determination: I believe I can establish myself in MLB.

Jung Jong-chul recently returned to Taiwan and is actively preparing for the 2026 6th World Baseball Classic (WBC), having joined the Chinese Taipei training squad. Despite being designated for assignment (DFA) twice by two parent clubs during training, and public concern about how this might affect his focus, Jung remains positive and firmly states, "I am confident I can play in the Major Leagues."

At the end of 2025, Jung was first designated for assignment by the Pittsburgh Pirates; although he was added to the Tampa Bay Rays' 40-man roster on January 8 this year, he was DFA’d again five days later. After being claimed by the New York Mets on January 17, he was DFA’d once more on the 22nd to clear roster space for signing right-hander Luis Garcia.

Despite the recent DFA by the Mets, Jung still received an invitation to Major League spring training. He explained, "There is indeed an invitation. Being on the 40-man roster guarantees participation in spring training. Both teams that previously designated me for assignment have confirmed I will attend spring training."

Regarding the frequent DFAs, Jung understands this is a normal part of professional baseball’s business operations—teams adjust their rosters based on needs. He views it with a balanced perspective: "I see it as a double-edged sword: while it’s a business move, it also means 'you are wanted,' which is why you keep being picked up. The key lies in how much a team needs you."

Looking ahead, Jung may face trades, releases, or demotion to the minors. Although uncertain about his next destination, he believes that as long as he keeps training and stays ready, opportunities will come: "Whether I stay in the majors or join a new team, and when or where that happens—I don’t dwell on it. It’s better to rest well now; when the time comes, the answer will reveal itself. I am confident I can play in the Major Leagues and will handle whatever comes my way then."
