The New York Yankees bolstered their bullpen through a trade with the Colorado Rockies, acquiring right-handed pitcher Angel Chivelli and sending minor league first baseman T.J. Rumfield to Colorado.

Yankees Receive: Right-Handed Pitcher Angel Chivelli
Rockies Receive: First Baseman T.J. Rumfield (ranked 22nd prospect in Yankees farm system by MLB Pipeline)
The 23-year-old Chivelli has pitched 90.1 innings in the majors over the past two seasons with the Rockies, posting a 6.18 ERA. Upon joining, he will work under pitching coach Matt Blake and bullpen coach Preston Claiborne.
“He’s a 23-year-old pitcher with impressive velocity and an exciting blend of talent,” said GM Brian Cashman. “His contract offers flexibility and he still has options remaining. He has one year of major league experience, with excellent fastball, changeup, and slider. We see a lot of untapped potential in him.”
In 73 major league appearances, Chivelli has allowed 107 hits, struck out 71, walked 33, and surrendered 20 home runs.
Despite the underwhelming stats, the Yankees believe in his upside. Chivelli’s pitching velocity is high, and in 2025, his changeup and offspeed pitches generated a combined 43.5% whiff rate, reinforcing the team’s confidence that his performance could improve after leaving hitter-friendly Coors Field.
“We’ve added another quality arm to our strong pitching staff,” Cashman emphasized. “It’s well known that you can never have too many pitchers.”
Last season, Chivelli appeared in 43 games for the Rockies, recording a 1-5 record with a 7.06 ERA. He also pitched in 10 relief appearances for Triple-A Albuquerque, posting a 7.00 ERA.
To clear a roster spot, the Yankees designated outfielder Michael Siani for assignment. Siani was acquired via waivers from the Dodgers on January 23.
Rumfield is expected to compete for the Rockies’ first base position, especially after the team parted ways with Michael Toglia last November.
The left-handed hitter played 138 games last season for Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes Barre, hitting .285/.378/.447 with 16 home runs and 31 doubles. The 25-year-old finished the season ranked 22nd on the Yankees’ farm system prospect list.
Rumfield was selected in the 12th round of the 2021 draft by the Phillies and was traded to the Yankees during the same offseason along with lefty Joel Valdez in exchange for right-hander Nick Nelson and catcher Donny Sands.
