The Athletics and their star shortstop Wilson have agreed to a seven-year contract extension.

Jacob Wilson has gone through numerous key moments in a brief time: selected by the Athletics in the 2023 draft, making his MLB debut in 2024, and in 2025 becoming the first rookie shortstop voted by fans into the All-Star starting lineup. Now in 2026, Wilson has hit a new milestone with the Athletics announcing a seven-year extension deal today. According to sources from MLB’s official site, the contract is worth $70 million in total and includes a team option for the 2028 season.

The 23-year-old Wilson finished second in the American League Rookie of the Year voting last season (teammate Nick Kurtz won the award). In his rookie year, he posted a .311 batting average with 13 home runs and an OPS of 0.799. This extension is a key move for the team to build a long-term core of position players ahead of their planned move to a new stadium in Las Vegas in 2028.

Since early 2025, designated hitter Brent Rooker (5 years, $60 million), outfielder Lawrence Butler (7 years, $65.5 million), and Tyler Soderstrom (7 years, $86 million) have all signed extensions of five years or longer with the team. Athletics general manager David Forst has also expressed the desire to extend contracts with Nick Kurtz and power-hitting catcher Shea Langeliers.

Wilson (son of former MLB shortstop Jack Wilson) was drafted in the first round after graduating from Grand Canyon University in 2023. He debuted in the majors in 2024, appearing in 28 games. During the 2025 season, his batting average remained above .350 until June 24.

Although the Athletics finished fourth in the AL West last season with a 76-86 record, they posted a 35-29 record (a .547 winning percentage) after the All-Star break, ranking among the top ten in the league. With Wilson, Rooker, Butler, and Soderstrom locked in long-term, and Kurtz expected to continue his impressive rookie performance, the Athletics have further bolstered their offense by signing second baseman Jeff McNeil and view the 2026 season as a critical year to contend for the playoffs.
