Jung Jong-chol's career faces another setback as the Washington Nationals revealed today that in order to claim right-hander George Soriano from the Atlanta Braves' waiver list, they had to free up a spot on their 40-man roster and therefore designated 24-year-old infielder Jung Jong-chol for assignment (DFA). This is Jung's fourth time on the waiver list this offseason, coming less than two days after the Nationals acquired him.
Jung Jong-chol’s movements have been frequent since last postseason: he was first DFA’d by the Pittsburgh Pirates in December; on January 8th, he was added to the Tampa Bay Rays' 40-man roster as a replacement; then DFA’d again by the Rays on January 13th due to trade needs; signed by the New York Mets on January 17th but DFA’d for the third time on the 22nd; after being claimed by the Nationals on the 29th, he faced the same situation again within 48 hours due to roster adjustments.
According to MLB rules, Jung Jong-chol faces three possible outcomes within the next seven days: being traded to a new team, being claimed off waivers by another club, or accepting a minor league assignment. Last season, Jung made his major league debut in three games, going 0-for-7 with three strikeouts. Although he has yet to record his first MLB hit, he still holds a minor league option, making him an attractive depth infielder for teams in need.
