The Chicago White Sox revealed today that through a trade with the Boston Red Sox, they received right-hander Jordan Hicks, minor league pitcher David Sandlin, and two players to be named later, sending minor league pitcher Gage Ziehl and a player to be named later in return.
As part of the deal, the Boston Red Sox will pay $8 million in cash, while Hicks is set to earn a total salary of $25 million over the next two seasons.
Trade Details
White Sox Receive: Right-handed pitcher Jordan Hicks, right-handed pitcher David Sandlin (the Red Sox’s No. 8 prospect), two players to be named later, and cash
Red Sox Receive: Right-handed pitcher Gage Ziehl (the White Sox’s No. 14 prospect) and a player to be named later
29-year-old Hicks appeared in 34 games last season with the San Francisco Giants and Boston Red Sox, posting a high ERA of 6.95. He was acquired by the Red Sox in a four-player trade involving Rafael Devers. Since the 2024 season, Hicks started 29 of 42 games for the Giants, but after joining the Red Sox, he has exclusively served as a reliever—a role in which he has had some success in the past.
This pitcher, known for his exceptional fastball velocity, will join the White Sox alongside right-hander David Sandlin. Following the trade, Sandlin became the White Sox’s 14th-ranked prospect on the MLB Pipeline list. In the most recent team ranking update, he was ranked 8th among the Red Sox’s top 30 prospects. The White Sox used part of the funds saved from trading Luis Robert Jr. along with $22 million in salary to the Mets to facilitate this deal.
22-year-old Ziehl was ranked as the White Sox’s 14th-best prospect on MLB Pipeline before the trade and became the Red Sox’s 20th-ranked prospect afterward. This right-hander was selected by the Yankees in the fourth round of the 2024 draft and was traded to Chicago before last July’s deadline in exchange for outfielder Austin Slater. In the 2025 season, Ziehl pitched in 22 minor league games across three levels (21 starts), recording a 7-6 win-loss record with a 4.12 ERA.
Although the White Sox are not currently in a clear contention phase, they have made interesting and proactive moves this offseason to strengthen their bullpen. The addition of Hicks, combined with Seranthony Domínguez and potential newcomers Sean Newcomb and Chris Murphy, forms a potentially revitalized bullpen core.
