As reported today by MLB.com journalist Daniel Kramer, an insider disclosed that the Seattle Mariners are set to obtain Cardinals’ second baseman Brendan Donovan in a three-way trade aimed at boosting their infield depth. The Tampa Bay Rays are also part of the deal, but the involved clubs have not officially announced it.
Donovan became the first rookie in Cardinals history to win a Gold Glove Award in 2022 and was again a finalist for the award in 2024. However, his best season in his four-year major league career did not arrive until 2025.
At 29 years old, Donovan earned his first National League All-Star selection in 2025 and set or matched several personal bests that year: a .287 batting average, a .422 slugging percentage, and 32 doubles. On September 23, during a 9-8 road victory over the San Francisco Giants, he hit four doubles in a single game, tying a Major League record.
In recent years, Donovan has struggled with injuries. In 2023, he played only 95 games due to right elbow ligament reconstruction surgery. He returned healthy for 153 games in 2024, but in 2025, a groin hernia affected his performance in the latter half of the season and required surgery, limiting him to 118 games for the year.
Known as a reliable defender, Donovan’s versatility across multiple positions adds significant value. Over his four-year MLB career, he has played 30 games at first base, 225 at second base, 46 at third base, 14 at shortstop, 163 in left field, and 30 in right field. Since his elbow surgery in 2023, the Cardinals have primarily positioned him at second base and left field to protect his throwing arm.
According to sources, Donovan agreed last month to a $5.8 million contract for 2026 with the team, avoiding salary arbitration. He will remain under team control for the next two seasons.
