The Dominican Republic, champions in 2013 and regarded as top contenders for the World Baseball Classic (WBC), have bolstered their roster with important additions. On February 3rd (Beijing time), the Dominican Baseball Federation officially announced that San Diego Padres star third baseman Manny Machado, Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Peña, and New York Yankees catcher Austin Wells have been confirmed for the national team. Along with New York Mets slugger Juan Soto, who was previously named captain, the Dominican Republic’s powerful batting lineup is nearly complete.
Now 33 years old, Machado is one of the team’s leaders. Entering his 14th MLB season, he played a steady 159 games last year, posting a .275 batting average, 27 home runs, 95 RBIs, and 14 stolen bases, while earning his seventh All-Star selection. He will provide consistent offense and defense for the national squad.

Astros’ middle infield anchor Peña joins the team fresh off his first All-Star appearance and in excellent form. At 28, he broke out in his fourth MLB season last year, hitting .304 over 150 games with 17 home runs, 62 RBIs, and 20 stolen bases. His presence will significantly strengthen the Dominican Republic’s infield defense and speed.

A notable newcomer is 26-year-old Yankees’ starting catcher Wells. Although born in the U.S., he qualifies to play through his mother’s heritage. This will be his first time representing the Dominican Republic. Wells secured the Yankees’ starting catcher role last season, playing a career-high 126 games, hitting 21 home runs, and driving in 71 runs, showcasing potent power hitting that addresses the team’s traditionally weaker catcher offense.
