Mexico's Four-Homer Game Leads to 16-0 Rout of Brazil; Mexico vs. USA Showdown Looms

Mexico's offensive arsenal was fully unleashed, setting the stage for a pivotal clash with the United States.

Today, in their second group stage game of the World Baseball Classic, Mexico crushed Brazil 16-0 in six innings, showcasing a dominant offensive performance and priming themselves for tomorrow night's highly anticipated battle for the top spot in Group B. Both Mexico and the USA currently remain undefeated.

“I've said it before, they are a super team,” Mexico's manager Benji Gil remarked about the USA squad. “Their roster is star-studded, featuring All-Stars, MVP candidates, Cy Young candidates, Gold Glove winners, Silver Slugger winners.”

“But this isn't about awards; it's about winning this one game.”

Julian Ornelas sealed the victory with a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning. According to Classic rules, the game ended early as Mexico led by 15 runs after at least five innings.

“I consider this home run the most significant one of my career so far,” Ornelas said. “Being able to wear this jersey on such an important stage makes this homer even more meaningful.”

Mexico's 16-0 triumph over Brazil ties for the third-largest margin of victory in Classic history, trailing only Korea's 22-2 win over China in 2023 and the USA's 17-0 victory over South Africa in the inaugural 2006 event. It also marks Mexico's highest single-game score in the Classic, matching their 16-1 win over Australia in 2009.

Mexican stars shone brightly at Houston's Minute Maid Park, where 36,380 fans transformed the stadium into a sea of green, white, and red.

Alejandro Kirk, participating in his second consecutive Classic, blasted a three-run homer to left-center field in the fourth inning, extending the lead to 10 runs.

Jarren Duran also donned the team's celebratory tricolor sombrero after hitting his first Classic home run, while his father watched excitedly from the stands.

Jonathan Aranda initiated the scoring with an RBI single in the first inning. Later, after Kirk's double, he sprinted around the bases, diving into home plate with his helmet flying off, and made an exaggerated “safe” gesture.

Randy Arozarena, the hero who led the team to the semifinals in 2023, contributed a double and scored two runs.

All four are MLB All-Stars. But the offensive firepower extended beyond them; every starter in Mexico's lineup recorded a hit, amassing 16 hits total, while Brazil—still seeking its first Classic win—managed only three.

Now the focus shifts to the USA, an opponent Mexico has often outperformed on the Classic stage. In four Classic meetings, Mexico has won three, including in 2023.

“It has evolved into a rivalry, perhaps unexpectedly,” Gil said. “Maybe their rivals should be Japan, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico. But because we've won, it has become a rivalry.”

“Tickets sold out quickly, right? This is a big stage. It's not just a baseball game; it's a sporting event. One of the most anticipated baseball games this year.”

“Credit goes to that ugly duckling Mexico, perhaps not supposed to be their rival. But we've achieved it through our performance on the field.”

Regarding the impending high-stakes matchup, USA manager Mark DeRosa previously stated: “Honestly, I believe we have the 30 best players in the world in our locker room.”

Gil responded on Sunday: “He has the 30 best players in the world? I think the Dominican Republic would have something to say, Japan would have something to say.”

He added: “We know they are strong. They are a great team. But we just need to be a little bit better than them. Even a half-run victory, we'll take it.”

At Mexico's game in Houston, the fans' decibel level even surpassed that of the USA team's supporters. When the two teams meet to decide the Group B leader, the atmosphere will likely rival, or even exceed, that of an MLB postseason game.

“I think tomorrow might be similar to tonight, but the intensity could be two or three times greater,” said Alek Thomas, who also homered on Sunday. “Mexican fans always come out in full force; it feels like their crazy home field here.”

By the end of the fifth inning, as Ramón Ayala's “Tragos Amargos” played, seemingly all Mexican fans in the stadium sang along. The big screen showcased fans one after another: some wearing lucha libre masks, some draped in Mexican flags, many wearing Mexico team jerseys. This love was reciprocal; Arozarena even signed autographs during the game.

Aranda said before the game that, in his view, the Classic even surpasses the World Series.

“There's no comparison,” Aranda stated. “It's simply better because representing your country, wearing your nation's name on your chest—that feeling is irreplaceable.”

From the opening moments when fans sang the Mexican national anthem to the end when the crowd collectively serenaded Vicente Fernández's “El Rey” as players departed, the volume never dropped.

“Hearing the anthem was so beautiful; it gave me goosebumps,” Ornelas said. “I can't wait for tomorrow's game, in this stadium, before those fans. It will be a feast for everyone.”

“Listening to those songs after the game felt incredible,” Gil said. “The only downside was I had to hurry into the clubhouse for a celebratory tequila—because with those songs playing, you can't just drink water.”
