Japan defeats Czech Republic 9-0; manager Hirokazu Ibata explains reason Shohei Ohtani did not play

In the final C-group preliminary match of the 2026 Sixth World Baseball Classic on March 10 evening, Japan defeated Czech Republic 9-0. However, one focal point of the match was that star player Shohei Ohtani did not appear. Regarding this, Japan Samurai team manager Hirokazu Ibata stated at the post-game press conference that Ohtani's absence was primarily due to a pre-established adjustment plan and considerations for MLB new season preparation.

Ibata said: "After Ohtani joined the national team, a complete training plan had been arranged, and he also underwent pitcher-related adjustments and practice. Therefore, after team evaluation, we decided to let him rest for this game." He further explained: "He adjusted according to the original training plan, plus the team would move after the match ended, so we made this arrangement."

Additionally, the coaching staff also considered that the MLB new season is about to start, requiring extra caution regarding Ohtani's physical condition and workload. Ibata emphasized: "The team will continue to assess Ohtani's playing timing under the premise of balancing competitiveness and player health."

Although Japan ultimately secured victory, the first half of the game was once suppressed by Czech starting pitcher Ondřej Satoria. Discussing the game content, Ibata noted: "Although we won 9-0, the process was actually not easy. The opposing starter mainly used fastballs and changeups, requiring batters some time to adapt in the early innings, and the second pitcher, a fastball-type, also posed certain pressure on the lineup."

Ibata also specifically highlighted Munetaka Murakami's home run as a crucial turning point in this match, helping the team open up the offense and secure the win.

As the tournament enters the knockout stage, subsequent matches will adopt a single-elimination format. Ibata stated that the team will definitely utilize all available strength to face the challenges: "We will prepare and give our full effort."
