Italy's perfect group stage leads to quarterfinals; Pasquantino's three homers also help USA advance

Thanks to Vinnie Pasquantino's historic three-home-run game, Italy clinched first place in Group B and advanced.

After causing a night of mathematical anxiety for the United States, Italy's captain Pasquantino led his team to a decisive 9–1 victory over Mexico in Houston's Minute Maid Park, wrapping up the group stage with an unstoppable offensive display.

Italy secured the group's top spot with a perfect 4–0 record, eliminating Mexico and advancing to a quarterfinal matchup against Puerto Rico on Sunday. This marks Italy's third group-stage breakthrough but its first as the group leader—a performance even praised publicly by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in parliament.

Equally important, the star-studded U.S. team, which faced danger after losing to Italy on Wednesday, also advanced smoothly and will face Canada on Saturday.

Even better, there was no need to invoke the three-team tiebreaker formula involving "runs allowed divided by defensive outs." But at least we had a chance to memorize it.

Mexico had a deeper pitching roster and more rest. But Italy deployed its ace—Philadelphia right-hander Aaron Nola as the starter—which proved decisive on a night where every run carried historical weight. Nola pitched efficiently over five innings, allowing only four hits, one walk, and striking out five. Mexico's limited scoring opportunities were thwarted by sharp defense: young shortstop Sam Antonacci cleverly induced Joey Ortiz into a double play in the third inning; catcher J.J. D'Orazio made a precise long throw to catch Nick Gonzales attempting to steal in the fifth.

Of course, continuing the tournament's tradition, Italy's bats remained fueled with caffeine energy.

Pasquantino opened the scoring for Italy in the second inning with a solo homer to the right-field corner off starter Javier Assad. "Pasquatch" is the heart and soul of this Italian squad, celebrating teammates' homers with espresso and kisses on the cheek. But this was only his first homer of the Classic—and it turned out to be far from his last.

Veteran infielder Jon Berti also homered off Assad in the fourth inning, extending the lead to 2–0. The tournament's surprise discovery Dante Nori executed a skillful sacrifice bunt in the fifth inning, sparking a three-run rally that pushed the score to 5–0.

Pasquantino homered again in the sixth inning, another blast near the right-field foul pole. In the eighth, he sent the ball once more to his favorite corner—yes, another solo shot, making Italy's path to advancement crystal clear.

Italy knew winning would secure its advancement; the U.S. knew Italy's win would secure theirs. This blue-clad squad, largely composed of Italian-Americans, ultimately delivered for both.
