Japan Team Suffers Historic Defeat, Manager Hirokazu Ibata Criticized by Japanese Netizens as Incompetent

In the 2026 World Baseball Classic quarterfinals, the Samurai Japan team lost to Venezuela, setting multiple dismal records including the highest single-game runs allowed in the Classic and the first failure to reach the semifinals in top-tier tournaments since 1999. After the match, Hirokazu Ibata bowed deeply to apologize to Japanese fans who traveled to Miami to support the team. In an interview, he stated that he had confidence in the pitchers he deployed, and that Japan's roster was not weak; it was just that the strength of other countries has been improving. On Japanese social media, intense discussions erupted. Some harshly criticized Ibata's tactical errors, such as keeping pitchers who were clearly struggling on the field; others expressed understanding, acknowledging that the opponent's capabilities have indeed advanced rapidly.

During the game, Japan's starting pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto allowed a leadoff home run after just two pitches. In the fifth inning, Tomoya Sumida's pitching mistake allowed Venezuela to continue scoring. Ibata explained post-game that his decisions to deploy pitchers were based on trust, and everyone performed well. He used around 60 pitches as a benchmark for changing pitchers because switching mid-inning would increase the burden on the pitchers. He believed Japan's roster was not weaker than the previous edition, "it's just that the strength of all countries is rising."

Some Japanese netizens pointed out clear issues in Ibata's management. "If they lost due to a clear gap in ability, it would be understandable, but this was not the case. They lost because of poor management, like continuing to use pitchers who were obviously not performing well." "A coach who cannot leverage the advantages of Japanese professional baseball and the potential of the players is truly baffling." "They seemed completely unaware of the players' condition."

Other netizens argued that there was an inherent gap in strength between the two teams, as Venezuela has many MLB players, and this is not related to Ibata personally. "With the global improvement in player quality, Japan has somewhat fallen behind. If you don't regularly watch baseball, you might be surprised by this change." "Managing a national team is not easy. If asked who would be the right person, I can't think of anyone."

Japanese baseball commentator Kazuhiro Takeda bluntly stated in his YouTube channel review of the match: "The unease among the pitching staff was exposed."

This edition's Japan team brought 14 pitchers, among whom only Shoma Fujii, Kazuki Ose, and Yuki Matsumoto were dedicated relief pitchers. Some analysts considered this one of the reasons for the defeat, but such arrangement was also unavoidable. Originally designated closer Hiromi Taira (Seibu) withdrew, then Hiroshi Ishii (Hanshin) exited due to injury during the tournament, and finally Yuki Matsui (Padres), who plays in the US, also withdrew, forcing an emergency additional call-up.
