Seiya Suzuki returns to Chicago Cubs spring training base, knee injury status remains unclear.

The Japan Samurai team was defeated by Venezuela in the quarterfinals of this World Baseball Classic, not only setting a record of missing the semifinals for the first time in team history, but also losing their key hitter Seiya Suzuki. Suzuki, who injured his right knee during a stolen base attempt, has returned to the Chicago Cubs' spring training base today and immediately underwent an MRI examination. Cubs manager Craig Counsell stated that they are currently awaiting the test results, and specific details will only be announced once the results are available.

According to on-site observations by a reporter from The Athletic, Seiya Suzuki walked heavily upon returning to the Arizona base, wearing a brace on his right knee. He was visibly protecting the injured area while walking, showing a slight limp.

This injury occurred during Japan's game against Venezuela on March 15. After drawing a walk in the first inning, Suzuki attempted a head-first slide to steal second base but was tagged out, injuring his right knee in the process. He was subsequently replaced due to inability to walk.

Regarding whether Suzuki can make it to the MLB opening games at the end of March, Counsell was cautious, refusing to make any assessment before the examination report is available. He stated they are waiting for the MRI results and will not speculate on the nature or severity of the injury; details will only be shared after obtaining specific information.

The 31-year-old Seiya Suzuki signed a five-year, $85 million contract with the Cubs in 2022, and this year is the final year of that contract. Last year, he delivered a standout performance in his MLB career, playing 151 games (a new high), hitting 32 home runs, contributing 103 RBIs, with a slash line of .245/.326/.478.

Originally aiming to secure a renewal or new contract in this "contract year," Suzuki now faces knee injury concerns at the end of spring training, undoubtedly adding uncertainty to the new season. If the injury is serious, it could not only affect the Cubs' opening lineup but also have a profound impact on the next steps of his career.
