Seiya Suzuki's knee injury remains unresolved, confirmed to miss Chicago Cubs' opening game.

Chicago Cubs' Japanese outfielder Seiya Suzuki (Seiya Suzuki) has not recovered from his right knee injury as expected and will not be able to participate in the opening game against the Washington Nationals next week. Manager Craig Counsell stated today that Suzuki's absence from the opening game is certain, but the team has not yet decided whether to place him on the injury list.

“Since he returned to spring training camp, we have been receiving positive updates,” Counsell said, “He definitely won’t be playing in the opening game. After the opening game timeframe, we need to decide whether to give him some rest. We still have time to make that decision. Everything else is progressing well, but it’s simply too soon for him to be ready.”

Seiya Suzuki sustained a mild sprain of the posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee while stealing a base in the first inning of Japan’s quarterfinal match against Venezuela in the Classic on March 14. After rejoining the team, he engaged in light throwing and batting drills but has not yet started running exercises. Counsell mentioned that Suzuki completed his scheduled regular batting practice in the hitting cage today. Running, stopping abruptly, starting, and sliding will be crucial components of his recovery plan. The manager reiterated that the team expects his absence to be brief.

Seiya Suzuki is a key figure in the Cubs' lineup, delivering his best offensive performance in his MLB career last season. During the regular season, he contributed 31 home runs, 32 doubles, and 103 RBIs, and added three more home runs in eight postseason games, achieving a slugging percentage of 0.613.

Due to Suzuki's inability to play in the opening game, the Cubs have informed veteran outfielder Michael Conforto (Michael Conforto) that he will be included in the opening season MLB roster. Conforto signed as a non-roster invitee and will be officially added to the 40-man roster and activated list before the season starts.

Besides Conforto, the Cubs also have versatile player Matt Shaw (Matt Shaw), who has received extensive playing time in right field during this year's spring training to prepare for a super utility role. Outfielders Kevin Alcántara (Kevin Alcántara), Dylan Carlson (Dylan Carlson), and Chas McCormick (Chas McCormick) are still competing for backup spots in the spring training camp.

Taillon's condition improves

Veteran right-handed pitcher Jameson Taillon (Jameson Taillon) pitched four scoreless innings against the Athletics on Saturday before being hit by home runs from Max Muncy (Max Muncy) and Lawrence Butler (Lawrence Butler) in the fifth inning. He recorded six strikeouts and seven swings-and-misses, utilizing six different pitches over 78 pitches, demonstrating solid performance. In his previous four spring training starts, Taillon allowed 23 runs over 9.1 innings, making this recovery encouraging.

“This is what Jameson Taillon should look like,” Counsell commented, “Aside from feeling fatigued slightly earlier than usual. The hot weather was a factor, and because of his earlier poor performance, we indeed made more adjustments this week. But the pitch quality was good, cleaner, sharper. This is the normal Jameson Taillon.”

Latest roster adjustments

Cubs rookie shortstop Jefferson Rojas (Jefferson Rojas) was reassigned to minor league spring training camp on Saturday. In 19 Cactus League games, he contributed 4 home runs, 4 doubles, and 11 RBIs, with an OPS of 0.877.

“Jefferson is only 20 years old—that’s the most crucial point,” Counsell said, “He has improved tremendously. A 20-year-old performing like that in the batter’s box, displaying such power at this age, is really exciting to watch.”

Other updates

• Right-handed pitcher Javier Assad (Javier Assad) was removed after pitching 2.1 innings against the Athletics on Friday due to a nail issue. Counsell indicated that his removal was precautionary, and he will continue his adjustments as scheduled.

• Cubs rookie BJ Murray (BJ Murray) was also reassigned to minor league spring training camp today.
