Yankees Shut Out Giants 7-0 in Opening Game, Offense Flourishes and Fried Pitches Well

Throughout the winter, outsiders kept saying the New York Yankees were "going with the same squad," as if that were a flaw. Yet they preferred to see it as an advantage. After all, this lineup led the league in scoring last year, and there were reasons to believe the starting pitchers would improve.

As the main attraction of MLB's streaming opening game, the Yankees fully deserved the prime-time spotlight. Their offense surged against the San Francisco Giants, building an early lead that allowed Max Fried to pitch comfortably, resulting in a 7-0 victory on Opening Night at Oracle Park.

A two-run triple by Trent Grisham ignited a five-run rally in the second inning, as the Yankees capitalized on the pitching of Giants starter Logan Webb. Ryan McMahon also contributed a two-run single in that inning, helping the Yankees secure their fifth consecutive Opening Day win.

José Caballero, Giancarlo Stanton, and Jazz Chisholm Jr. also drove in runs against Webb, who pitched five innings and allowed seven runs (six earned).

Fried was already the Yankees' ace last season, but due to Gerrit Cole's injury timing, he didn't start the opening game. This year was different. Although he began shaky in the first inning, walking leadoff hitter Luis Arraez, Fried quickly settled down. Offensive support helped him get into rhythm, setting a positive tone for his second season in New York. Fried pitched 6.1 innings without allowing a run, giving up two hits, one walk, and striking out four.

Aaron Judge struck out in his first four plate appearances, becoming the first reigning MVP to record four strikeouts in his team's season opener.

This game also marked the first official MLB use of the automated strike/ball challenge system. In the fourth inning, Caballero lightly tapped his helmet to challenge a called strike against Webb, and the system confirmed the call was correct.
