
Following the full implementation of the ABS automatic strike-ball challenge system, MLB released relevant statistics today. The data shows that in the first 91 games of the new season, the error rate of umpire calls after being challenged reached 55%, and the player most adept at challenges is Dodgers catcher Will Smith.
During the opening week of the MLB season (March 26 to April 1), 91 games were played. Umpire strike-ball calls were challenged 343 times, averaging 3.8 per game. Among these, 189 challenges were successful (i.e., the call was overturned), while 154 upheld the original decision, translating to an umpire error rate of 55%.
Batters initiated 163 challenges, while pitcher-catcher pairs initiated 180. In terms of success rate, batters achieved 52% (85 successful, 78 failed), and pitcher-catcher pairs achieved 58% (104 successful, 76 failed).
The individual with the most challenges was White Sox catcher Korey Lee, with 10 total; followed by Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh with 9; Dodgers catcher Smith and Twins catcher Ryan Jeffers each had 8. Among players with the most successful challenges, Smith and Raleigh each succeeded 5 times, tying for first place.
