Shohei Ohtani's former teammate Mike Trout hit by pitch on hand, X-ray negative, day-to-day.

Mike Trout, the superstar teammate of Shohei Ohtani during his time with the Los Angeles Angels, appears to have avoided a serious injury today. He was hit on the left hand by a 94.2 mph fastball from Seattle Mariners reliever Casey Legumina, but X-ray results were negative. He is currently listed as day-to-day with a contusion.

Trout exited the game in the eighth inning during the Angels' 8-7 victory in an 11-inning battle today. He tried to pull back from an inside fastball by Legumina, but the ball struck his hand, causing him to grimace in pain. He initially attempted to stay in the game and walked a few steps along the first-base line with trainer Mike Frostad, before being replaced by pinch-runner Oswald Peraza. The three-time AL MVP and 11-time All-Star had noticeable swelling on his hand after the game and appeared very frustrated.

“I was scared seeing it swell up so much,” Trout said, “so I'm very relieved there's no fracture.”

This is the second time Trout has been hit by a Mariners pitcher in this series. In the Angels' home opener two days ago, he was struck by a sinker from right-hander Bryan Woo. Woo threw two inside pitches consecutively, and the second one hit Trout.

Trout stated that he understands why Mariners pitchers throw inside, but believes they need better control of their location.

“We know where they want to attack me, with high inside fastballs, so it's frustrating,” Trout said. “If you can't control that spot, you shouldn't pitch there. That's how it is.”

Trout mentioned that Woo apologized to him later during the previous game's contest, after a foul ball, when Woo passed near the pitcher's mound. In that same game, Angels left-hander Reid Detmers also threw a pitch behind Mariners star Julio Rodríguez but did not hit him. Detmers said it was an accidental misfire.

Although the two teams had a bench-clearing incident in 2022 after the Angels retaliated for Trout being hit by a pitch, manager Kurt Suzuki downplayed any ongoing animosity between the sides.

“The ball can get away,” Suzuki said. “That's baseball. Like I said before, it's part of the game. Obviously, you don't want to see him get hit, and you don't want Mike to get injured. But at the same time, you understand—I was a catcher—they are trying to attack the hitter.”
