Japanese left-handed pitcher Yusei Kikuchi of the Los Angeles Angels made his fifth start of the season, pitching six innings at home against the San Diego Padres, allowing only four hits, striking out eight, and giving up no runs. However, the team's batting lineup completely stalled, ultimately preventing him from securing his first win of the season.
The 34-year-old Kikuchi had a difficult start to this season, losing two of his first four starts with an ERA of 7.50, and nearly every game saw him allow runs within the first three innings. However, in this game, he clearly regained his rhythm. Although he walked Fernando Tatis Jr. at the start, catcher Logan O'Hoppe made a strong throw to catch a stolen base attempt, successfully defusing the crisis and achieving an ideal three-up-three-down opening.
Moving into the middle innings, Kikuchi continued to display his dominance. In the third inning, facing a crisis with no outs and runners on first and second, he consecutively produced strikeouts and a double play on a line drive to third base, successfully keeping runs off the board. In the fifth inning, although the first batter hit a double, he quickly stabilized, first forcing a ground ball to shortstop, then delivering a strikeout. Even after hitting Jake Cronenworth with a pitch, he still managed to strike out Luis Rengifo, once again averting a scoring threat.
Throughout the game, Kikuchi delivered his best performance of the season, not only pitching six full innings without allowing runs for the first time, but also effectively improving his early-game instability, showing clear signs of stabilization. However, the Angels' batting lineup could not provide any offensive support, rendering his quality start futile.
The Angels had a chance to score in the second inning when Yoán Moncada hit a deep fly ball to right-center field, but it was spectacularly caught by Padres center fielder Jackson Merrill leaping up, missing the opportunity to score first. The team ultimately failed to score any runs, turning Kikuchi's excellent pitching effort into a wasted opportunity.
After this game, Kikuchi's ERA dropped to 5.63. Although his statistics improved, he still hasn't secured his first win this season. Notably, he experienced a similarly slow start last season, not getting his first win until his 11th start, and this year he faces a similar situation again.
