At Citizens Bank Park, the atmosphere was electric as Philadelphia took on their fierce rivals, the New York Mets. In the fifth inning, first baseman Bryce Harper hit a triple, securing his very first career cycle and making the night unforgettable.
This marked the 11th cycle in Phillies franchise history and the second in the majors this season, coming just five days after Chicago Cubs’ Pete Crow-Armstrong accomplished the feat against the Colorado Rockies.
Even before Harper made history, Phillies fans had plenty to cheer about. MLB home run leader Kyle Schwarber blasted two homers in a third inning where Philadelphia scored eight runs, finishing the game with three home runs total.
Harper started the game with a homer (his 16th of the season) in the first inning, then added a double and a single in the third. His triple was a two-run hit that extended the Phillies’ lead to 13-1, marking his second triple of the year and his first season with more than one since 2020.
On that historic ball hit by Harper into left-center gap, the Mets might have had a play at third base, but shortstop Zack Short chose to throw home in an attempt to prevent Schwarber from scoring, which proved unsuccessful.
It was only the second time in MLB history that a teammate hit three homers in the same game as a cycle, the previous occasion dating back to 1932 when a Yankees player accomplished the feat in Philadelphia—coincidentally, also in Philly.
