The Dodgers' bullpen has taken another hit, as right-handed reliever Blake Treinen was placed on the 15-day injured list today because of right elbow inflammation.
As a corresponding adjustment, right-hander Chayce McDermott has been called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City to reinforce the bullpen. McDermott has a 5.40 ERA this season with the Comets and has made one appearance for the Dodgers, tossing a scoreless inning.
Treinen last pitched on Saturday, throwing a scoreless top of the ninth inning. The Dodgers then secured a walk-off 6-5 victory thanks to an RBI single by Dalton Rushing and an error by the Orioles. Treinen felt no discomfort at the time, but today he reported issues with elbow extension.
Manager Dave Roberts said that after Treinen underwent imaging on his elbow, the diagnosis remains unclear. However, Roberts indicated that the veteran, who has a 3.52 ERA over 29 appearances, will be "out for a while." For now, Treinen is only resting and receiving treatment for his elbow, with no further medical procedures planned.
Treinen was initially one of the key late-inning relievers for the Dodgers early this season, but his inconsistent performance in high-leverage situations led Roberts to seek easier spots for him to get back on track. With Treinen's instability dating back to last year, Kyle Hurt and Will Klein have become the preferred right-handed options for high-pressure innings.
Treinen joins a growing list of injured relievers in the Dodgers' bullpen, though two of them are nearing a return. Brock Stewart (left foot bone spur) could be activated as early as Tuesday during the team's road trip against the Minnesota Twins. Evan Phillips (Tommy John surgery) is expected to follow shortly after completing his rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City in early July.
The Dodgers have also been without closer Edwin Díaz for most of this season, as the right-hander has been sidelined long-term after undergoing surgery to remove loose bodies from his elbow. Díaz has begun throwing bullpen sessions this week, a significant step forward, and he remains on track to return at some point after the All-Star break.
