Jazz Chisholm Jr. chewing on that lollipop didn't lead to a full-blown "lollipop war," but it did create a bit of a headache for the Yankees. Manager Aaron Boone's message was straightforward: annoyed yes, but it stops here.
Yankees second baseman Chisholm stepped onto the field in the bottom of the fifth inning of yesterday's 3-5 loss to the Tigers with a green lollipop in his mouth. Boone directly said on the "Talkin' Yanks" podcast by Jomboy Media today: "That really pissed me off."
Asked about it again during pregame media availability at Comerica Park yesterday, Boone responded: "I've talked to him about it, and it's time to move on. Let's be honest—I was pretty annoyed by it. I brought it up to his face. At the end of the day, it's not a huge deal."
Boone has always emphasized getting to know his players. A reporter asked him if that approach makes conversations like this one easier to have.
"Maybe," Boone said, "but I didn't know about it during the game. Someone told me afterward. So, it pissed me off, and I dealt with it. I don't think that kind of thing belongs in our games."
Notably, during that fifth inning when Chisholm had the lollipop, the Tigers didn't hit the ball to the infield, so nothing happened around him the entire time.
In that game against the Tigers, Chisholm went 1-for-4. He is batting .226 this season with 11 home runs and 31 RBIs. His 23 stolen bases rank third in the American League and fourth in all of MLB. He is also the first Yankees player since Brett Gardner in 2010 to record at least 23 steals in the team's first 77 games.
