Boston Red Sox infielder Tsung-Che Cheng and Houston Astros pitcher Kai-Wei Deng were both optioned to Triple-A on the same day.

Following a 6-1 victory over the Blue Jays at home in Boston, the Red Sox announced that infielder Tsung-Che Cheng was being optioned to Triple-A. Earlier on the same day, the Houston Astros also sent pitcher Kai-Wei Deng to Triple-A.

The Red Sox completed a trade with the Washington Nationals yesterday, acquiring 25-year-old infielder Curtis Mead. Mead has recorded 17 home runs and 48 RBIs this season, and is expected to play in tomorrow's game against the Athletics. To make room on the roster, the coaching staff decided to send Cheng back to Triple-A.

Tsung-Che Cheng's most recent appearance was on July 23, when he went 0-for-3 in the first game of a doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles at home. He has since sat on the bench for four consecutive games. This season, he has played in 14 games, with 10 hits in 39 at-bats, a batting average of .256, 5 RBIs, and 7 runs scored. He has yet to hit his first career home run in the majors.

Since returning to the majors on July 20, Kai-Wei Deng has made two relief appearances, totaling 4.1 innings pitched and allowing two runs. Two days ago, he pitched two innings against the Chicago White Sox, giving up two runs but earning the win. This season, he has appeared in 25 games, 10 of them starts, with a record of 5 wins, 6 losses, 3 holds, and an ERA of 4.35.

Astros manager Joe Espada stated that the move was made because the team needed "fresh arms." After returning to Triple-A, Deng will continue to adjust as a reliever, with the focus on making his fastball and slider/cutter more consistent in attacking the strike zone.
