The potential was recognised and table tennis was listed as a core sport by the National Sports Council of Malaysia for the first time

Table tennis was listed as a core sport by the Malaysian National Sports Council for the first time. The Cabinet Sports Development Committee meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Zahid listed 20 sports as core sports on the 14th local time, including water sports (swimming and diving), weightlifting, badminton, track cycling, lawn bowling, e-sports, gymnastics (competitive gymnastics and rhythmic gymnastics), hockey, karate, archery, shooting, athletics, sailing, windsurfing, table tennis, rattan, Malay martial arts, squash, taekwondo, bowling and martial arts.

In recent years, the Malaysian table tennis team has continued to achieve success in international competitions, and its potential has been recognized by the National Sports Council, which has listed table tennis as a core sport

Core sports are defined as those that are expected to contribute medals in international competitions, such as the SEA Games, Asian Games, and Olympic Games. Selected projects will receive a full range of training support, including coaching, facilities and funding. The list will be re-evaluated every 4 years according to the Olympic cycle. The selection of core events is based on a number of key criteria, such as participation and performance in international competitions, sports management and athlete development programmes.

The Malaysian Table Tennis Association is happy to see it as a core sport and believes it will open up more opportunities for the development of table tennis players and access to high-quality training resources. In a statement, the Malaysian Table Tennis Association said, "This is a recognition of the efforts made by all parties to develop the sport. The Malaysian Table Tennis Association is very grateful for the trust of the National Sports Council. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of the new management team, we are back on the right track. We will continue to support our national athletes and fight for Malaysia's glory on the international stage. ”
