Boston Red Sox star rookie Kristian Campbell has begun training at first base after Triston Casas was reimbursed for the season with a knee injury.
Kristian Campbell first practiced ahead of the series opener against the Atlanta Warriors at Fenway Park on Friday night, and Red Sox head coach Alex Cora spoke to reporters before the game.
"Looking for options." Alex Cora told reporters, "Obviously, we might have Romy Gonzalez on the pitch this weekend or early next week, but let Kristian Campbell guard first base and see how he goes, which is where we are now."
Earlier this month, Triston Casas ruptured a tendon in his left knee while running to first base against the Minnesota Twins, and substitute first baseman Romy Gonzalez was placed on the 10-day injury list last week with a left quadriceps contusion.
A potential replacement, star striker Rafael Devers, said he was reluctant to move to first base after Triston Casas went down because he moved from 3rd base to a designated batter during spring practice to make room for Alex Bregman.
Kristian Campbell is one of baseball's most promising players, having been promoted to the major leagues at the start of the season and as the team's leading second baseman at the start of the season, and has also served as an outfielder, shortstop and third baseman throughout his career, but never as a first baseman.
When asked what it would take for Kristian Campbell to become the team's starting first baseman, Alex Cora added, "It's already started, right? It could take 10 days, 15 days, 1 month, 2 months, but we started the process and pushed him to first base."
