The New York Mets have added Megill to the injury list to recall Garza

For months, the Mets have benefited from an unusually deep depth of starting pitchers. They trust in a number of offseason signings and have largely kept them healthy.

Now that depth is being depleted at a rapid rate.

The Mets today put right pitcher Tylor Megill on the 15th injury list due to a sprained right elbow. MRI showed no structural damage to his elbow, only significant inflammation in the joint. But head coach Carlos Mendoza said that even in the best case scenario, Mergill will be out for 4-5 weeks.

"Considering all the elbow-related factors, this is probably the best outcome for this condition," says Megill.

When starting against the Rays on Saturday, McGill described a "tugging sensation" on his right elbow, especially when throwing a speedball. He touched the ball twice (both slippery) and threw a home plate. He admits that when throwing the ball with elbow discomfort, he has no control over the trajectory of the slide. But the MRI results were reassuring – the injury wouldn't be a long-term problem.

The initial plan is to recuperate for 7-10 days. Restart rehabilitation if symptoms disappear; Otherwise, recuperation will be extended.

Maygill started 14 games this season with a 3.95 ERA (1.09 in the first five games and 5.56 in the next five). "I would have liked to stay fit and finish every start," he said, "and now I need to recuperate and reassess in 10 days." "

In isolation, the impact of this injury on the Met is limited. But reality is not a vacuum – last week ace Kodai Senga was sidelined until at least mid-July with a right hamstring strain; Frankie Montas struggled with a latissimus dorsi strain. Montas will have his last rehab precedence today, when the rehab clock expires.

What's more, Griffin Cannon and Paul Blackburn combined for 10.93 in the last 10 days.

With Megill on the injury list, the Mets are left in the rotation: David Peterson, Clay Holmes, Canning and Blackburn. The team recalls backup pitcher Justin Garza to leave the roster vacant and will use a temporary starter against the Phillies on Friday.

Provisional starters undecided: Left pitcher Brandon Waddell was ruled out Tuesday for a triple-A Syracuse board; Right pitcher Justin Hagenman (Justin Hagenman) is the first choice because he has successfully replaced the starter this season and has a 3.18 ERA in the last five games.

The team also has three top rookies: Brandon Sproat, who is second on the farm, Nolan McLean who is fifth and Blade Tidwell, who is No. 14. But McClain has been consistent in the minor leagues (38.2 games in his triple-A career), and the Mets have historically been reluctant to promote such rookies to fill in the gaps.

The team sees Saturday as a purely temporary starter, as they remain optimistic that Montas will be in the starting rotation next week. Montas has a 13.17 ERA in the rehab game, and pitcher coach Jeremy Hefner is helping to fix a series of mechanic issues. The team believes that he is currently healthy and can contribute if he improves on the last minor league board.

"Let's hope he'll finish tomorrow, get a good result and get back in shape, and then go into the rotation," Mendoza said today, "and that's the ideal script." "
