On August 31st Beijing time, 37-year-old Jeremy Lin updated his social media to officially announce his retirement, ending a 15-year professional career. Here is his social media statement —
As a professional athlete, we have always known that "retirement" was approaching. Throughout the past 15 years, I have been fully aware that one day I would have to step away, but now that the time has truly come to say goodbye to basketball, it remains the hardest decision I have ever made in my life.
Being able to compete under the brightest lights against the toughest opponents and challenge the stereotypes about players with my physical profile has been the greatest honor of my life. I fulfilled a childhood dream I once thought impossible: playing in front of fans worldwide. I will always be that child at heart, energized and joyful whenever I touch a basketball.
Along this journey, so many people have sacrificed and supported me to an extent I cannot repay. Thank you all for your trust and companionship, for celebrating the highlights with me and helping me rise during the lows. This is a journey I never wanted to end, but I know the time has come. I will forever cherish every moment playing in front of you — our memories go far beyond basketball itself. But now it’s time for us to move forward together. Let’s look ahead to everything the future holds.
Sincerely love each and every one of you!
