On August 31st Beijing time, Slovenia was defeated by France 95-103. In the closing seconds, French player Francisco, after shaking hands with Doncic, rushed into the restricted area for a layup, almost triggering a big clash between the teams. This scene sparked widespread debate post-match.
France’s head coach Faure stood by Francisco’s choice. "Sylvain (Francisco)'s last basket was crucial since every point might influence the final result. We cannot predict what will happen tomorrow or Sunday, which is why from the start of the tournament we have emphasized that every game is critical—we need to win every match we can." Faure said at the post-game press conference.
French player Koulibaly spoke about the emotional tension caused by the controversial ending: “In the final moments, I understand their (Slovenia’s) frustration—if I were in their position, I would feel upset too. But that’s part of the game, and we have to accept such outcomes.”
With only 2 seconds left in the game, French guard Francisco completed an uncontested layup while Slovenian players appeared to have stopped defending. Just before that, Slovenian star Doncic had approached Francisco to embrace and shake hands, both congratulating France on the win and acknowledging Francisco’s outstanding individual performance.
This brief interaction suddenly heightened the tension on the court, eventually leading to a physical altercation between players from both sides.
A fan wrote on social media after the game: “A handshake should have ended it fairly and respectfully!!!”
French player Yabusele responded to that social media post: “Every point matters. Luka (Doncic) shouldn’t have initiated a handshake when (France) was supposed to continue attacking—that was his mistake.”
