As of September 13 Beijing time, according to NBA reporter Evan Sidery, currently no NBA team is interested in signing Ben Simmons. After parting ways with his agent, he has now chosen to represent himself. Sidery also noted that all signs indicate Simmons is unlikely to find a new team by the start of the upcoming season, and for the 29-year-old player, retirement might indeed become a real possibility.
When he first entered the league, Simmons was seen as a potential future face of the NBA, even being called the next LeBron James. However, while the nearly 41-year-old LeBron is still competing in the NBA, 29-year-old Simmons is already out of work and facing the possibility of retirement.
Reporter Stein reported: “Sources within the league say the Knicks did offer Simmons a one-year contract, but the former All-Star chose to decline it.” With training camp approaching, the Knicks can currently only offer a minimum salary contract; after playing for the Clippers, Simmons had hoped to secure a deal above the minimum.
At present, Simmons has split with his agent Bernie Lee. Earlier reports indicated that Simmons, who has been listed as ‘Did Not Play’ (DNP) multiple times over the past few seasons and has earned over $200 million in his career, is signaling uncertainty about whether he still wants to continue playing in the NBA. Perhaps his NBA career may indeed be coming to an end.
It’s undeniable that Simmons still possesses strong defensive versatility and excellent playmaking skills, especially considering his height and build (2.11 meters), which makes these abilities even more valuable. Yet, at this stage, it seems no team is willing to offer him more than a minimum salary contract. When the new season arrives, Simmons may have to choose between retiring or playing overseas.
By the way, Ben Simmons has recently taken up fishing and often shares his catches on social media. If he decides to retire, he might have more time to devote to this hobby.
