Returning to his former team! Dennis Smith Jr. signs a one-year deal to rejoin the Dallas Mavericks after playing for Real Madrid last season.

On September 19th Beijing time, according to Shams, guard Dennis Smith Jr. has reached an agreement to sign a one-year contract with the Dallas Mavericks, returning to his old team.

Smith is heading back to the team that initially picked him—in the 2017 NBA Draft, the Mavericks chose him 9th overall in the first round. He is set to join the Mavericks’ training camp. Currently, the Mavericks’ roster is full, but guard Brandon Williams holds a partially guaranteed contract, leaving some room for roster adjustments.

Smith spent his first one and a half seasons with the Mavericks before being traded to the New York Knicks as part of the deal that sent Kristaps Porziņģis to Dallas. The athletic guard played for the Knicks from January 2019 to February 2021; afterward, he was traded to the Detroit Pistons in a deal that sent Derrick Rose to New York.

Following that, Smith played for three different NBA teams over three consecutive seasons: the Portland Trail Blazers, Charlotte Hornets, and Brooklyn Nets, most recently during the 2023-24 season. In the 2024-25 season, he competed in the European basketball league with Real Madrid.

At 27 years old, Smith has appeared in 326 NBA games across seven seasons, averaging 9.7 points, 4.2 assists, and 3 rebounds per game.
