On October 23rd Beijing time, NBA reporter Shams Charania reported that Chauncey Billups, head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers, was taken into custody by the FBI for alleged illegal gambling activities.
The Trail Blazers just suffered a close defeat against the Timberwolves in today’s opening game. Chinese player Yang Hansheng scored only 2 points in the first half and did not get any playing time in the second half. After the game, Billups explained in the press conference that Yang was taken out because the opponent switched to a small lineup, which forced the decision to bench him.
It is still unclear exactly what kind of illegal gambling Billups was involved in. Meanwhile, Miami Heat guard Rozier was arrested early Thursday local time for suspected involvement in illegal betting. It remains unknown whether Billups’ case is connected to Rozier’s incident. Kash Patel, Director of the FBI’s New York Eastern District, will hold a press conference at 10 a.m. Eastern Time to announce further details of the case.
Billups was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame last year and signed a long-term contract extension with the Trail Blazers this past April. Whether Billups will continue coaching the Trail Blazers in the future and how this will affect Yang Hansheng remains to be seen.
