The Lakers plan to pursue Giannis Antetokounmpo! Three first-round picks plus Reaves are on the table, forming a dream duo with Doncic.

On December 18th, Lakers insider Buehler revealed that the Lakers have been firmly holding onto their 2026 first-round pick, intending to use it to try and bring in Giannis this summer or in the upcoming season.

He explained, "From what I understand, the reason the Lakers are holding tight to their 2026 draft pick is to have the chance to sign a star player like Giannis this summer, next season, or during the offseason when other stars might be available for trade. This plan is well thought out, considering they could offer up to three draft picks for a trade on draft night. For example, if the Lakers hold the 26th pick at that time."

“In theory, they could privately negotiate a deal, such as with the Bucks: 'How about this? We give you this pick along with two other first-round picks, and also trade Austin Reaves through a sign-and-trade arrangement. Since it’s the offseason, the salary cap situation can be managed smoothly.'”

“The NBA’s collective bargaining agreement allows for relatively flexible trade rules. While teams must still follow salary cap and luxury tax rules at different times, there is generally more leeway during the offseason. So they could propose to the Bucks: 'Would you accept Reaves plus some additional assets and three first-round picks in exchange for Giannis?' Such negotiations are entirely feasible, and theoretically, they could even make the draft selections on behalf of the Bucks.”

The pairing of Giannis and Doncic is considered a dream combination. The Lakers might be planning to trade Reaves to acquire Giannis, aiming to find an ideal long-term partner for Doncic. Although Reaves has performed admirably this season, his potential has certain limits and he may not develop into the superstar the Lakers hope for.

If they succeed in bringing in Giannis, the Lakers would have one of the most dominant duos in the league, instantly becoming strong contenders for the championship. Whenever the right opportunity arises, the Lakers could decisively make another blockbuster move to acquire a superstar.
