Penalty imminent? Renowned reporter reveals Clippers may forfeit 3 first-round picks, fine could exceed $30 million

On March 12 Beijing time, the NBA has not yet announced the investigation results and penalty decision regarding Kawhi Leonard's "dual contract" case. However, ESPN reporter Frank Isola disclosed shocking news on a radio program, stating he heard the Clippers might be penalized with the loss of 3 first-round picks and a fine surpassing $30 million.

“I heard, I don’t know if it’s true, I heard they (the Clippers) might forfeit three first-round picks,” Isola said on the program.

The host questioned whether the Clippers even have three first-round picks available for such a penalty. Isola then discussed the fine. “And there’s also a fine, a very large amount, I heard it’s over $30 million.”

Kawhi Leonard's "dual contract case" (also known as the Aspiration scandal) could become one of the most severe salary cap violations in recent NBA history. Previous reports indicated that Clippers owner Steve Ballmer, through affiliated companies, bypassed the salary cap to provide Leonard substantial off-court benefits via "fake endorsement + stay-bound" arrangements. If the league proves these allegations true, it may consider severe penalties such voiding Leonard's contract, forfeiting draft picks, and imposing massive fines.

For the Clippers, the most daunting penalties would likely be the first two, as Ballmer is not short on funds. However, if Kawhi becomes a free agent and draft picks are forfeited, the Clippers would essentially lose both their present and future.

So far this season, Leonard averages 28.3 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 3.8 assists. The Clippers currently stand at 33 wins and 32 losses, ranking 8th in the Western Conference.
