Thunder vs. Wizards Brawl Penalties: Mitchell and Champagnie Each Suspended for 1 Game, Three Players Total $120,000 in Fines

On March 23 Beijing time, the NBA officially announced that due to involvement in the conflict between the two teams on Sunday, Wizards forward Justin Champagnie and Thunder guard Ajay Mitchell have each been suspended for one game. The league stated that Champagnie and Mitchell were suspended without pay for initiating and escalating the on-court altercation, which spread to the spectator area. In addition to the suspensions, Thunder interior player Jalen Williams was fined $50,000, Thunder guard Carson Wallace and Wizards forward Anthony Gill were each fined $35,000.

After extensive review, the referees assessed two technical fouls each to Champagnie and Jalen Williams, resulting in their ejection (two technical fouls lead to automatic ejection). Mitchell and Wallace each received one technical foul and were also ejected.

Head referee John Goble explained in a post-game group interview: During a dead-ball situation, Champagnie and Jalen Williams pushed each other, each receiving one technical foul; Champagnie received another technical foul for touching Mitchell's face; Jalen Williams was assessed his second technical foul due to his actions during the brawl.

Goble added that Mitchell and Wallace were ejected because they did not attempt to stop the conflict but instead escalated the situation. Anthony Gill did not receive any penalty during the game, but the NBA imposed an additional penalty after subsequent review.

Salary expert Bobby Marks noted that although Champagnie and Mitchell were suspended, the financial impact is relatively light due to their lower salary levels. Champagnie, with a $2.35 million annual salary, will lose $13,503; Mitchell, with a $3 million annual salary, will lose $17,241.
