Return to Cleveland! Cavaliers pursue both LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo, while the Lakers are set to acquire Cavaliers center Jarrett Allen

LeBron James will become aunrestricted free agent this summer, and his next move is the subject of much speculation. If he chooses to remain in Los Angeles, the Lakers need him totake a pay cutin order to improve the team.

After being ousted in the second round, James spoke on his podcast about the talent disparity between the Lakers and the Thunder. This was effectively a veiled critique of the Lakers' management. The Lakers lack the necessary talent and roster strength, hence their defeat.

In terms of recruiting and identifying talent, the Lakers have fallen short over the years. In the 2021 offseason, the Lakers chose to keep Talen Horton-Tucker and let Alex Caruso walk. Now Caruso has become a key piece for the Thunder, with one foot already on the Finals stage.

The Lakers do have an opportunity to upgrade their roster this summer. With a number of players entering free agency, including James, Rui Hachimura, and possibly Austin Reaves, the Lakers are expected to have significant cap space. However, this does not mean their roster will undergo a complete overhaul this offseason.

NBA reporter Sean Deveney stated: "Yes, the Lakers have cap space, but there aren't many top-tier free agents available on the market. Ultimately, the feeling is that the Lakers will use that space as a'trade tool'—either to acquire more assets or to sign a solid role player."

According to reports, there is a consensus within the Lakers organization that they really like their current group of players and may keep most of the roster for the 2025-26 season.

This means:

  • LeBron JamesandAustin Reaveswill stay with the team
  • IfRui Hachimuradoes not receive an outrageous offer, he is also likely to return
  • Marcus SmartandLuke Kennarddepending on offers, they fall into the "possible return" category
  • Bronny JamesandJaxson Hayes? Highly likely to return
  • Deandre Aytonis in a similar situation; he may not opt out of his current contract

Keeping LeBron James will be a significant challenge for the Lakers, as multiple teams are pursuing him.

Former NBA guardJeff Teaguesaid on his podcast: "After the Cavaliers wereswept by the Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals, the only way out of that awkward situation might be to bring back the franchise legendLeBron James."

NBA reporter Evan Sidery indicated that the Cavaliers plan to go all out this summer to pursue James, hoping the legendary veteran canlead the team to the ultimate breakthrough, likely in what would be the final season of his career.

The Cavaliers' front office aims to form a big three of LeBron withDonovan MitchellandEvan Mobley, creating a core framework capable of contending for a championship.

However, the Cavaliers are currently the only team in the league whosetotal salary exceeds the second luxury tax apron, which directly results in their2033 first-round pick being frozen and unavailable for trades.

According to multiple sources, the Lakers areactively seeking to upgrade the center position for Luka Doncic, andLeBron Jamescould be the key trade chip in a sign-and-trade deal to facilitate this move.

Meanwhile, if the Cavaliers want to bring James back this offseason and the Lakers can acquire a starting-caliber center in the process, thenJarrett Allenand his $28 million salary contract would serve as the perfectsalary-matching vehiclefor this potential three-team trade.

In previous trade rumors, the Lakers had already identifiedAllenas a target. The Cavaliers could also operate a sign-and-trade for forward Dean Wade. Dean Wade is about to enter unrestricted free agency, and it appears he has already played his last game for Cleveland.

Another reporter, Brian Windhorst, said that the Cavaliers' plan to pursue both LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo is now on the agenda. Cleveland could send Mobley and other assets to the Bucks to acquire Giannis, while James could return to his hometown as an unrestricted free agent.

LeBron James + Giannis Antetokounmpo? That lineup is almost too beautiful to imagine!
