On May 28, Beijing time, the NBA announced that after a league review, Spurs player Mason Plumlee's foul on McCain in Game 5 has been upgraded to a Level 1 flagrant foul. The upgraded foul took place with 1 minute and 39 seconds remaining in the game.

Slow-motion footage showed that Plumlee, while pursuing Caruso, deliberately drove into McCain, knocking him to the floor. Hartenstein was extremely displeased and yelled a couple of words at Plumlee from behind Biyombo, which also upset Biyombo, who then gestured and pointed at Hartenstein. On the following possession, Biyombo also knocked McCain down.

After the game, a reporter asked McCain: "When you're moving on the court, your energy is infectious. You're always smiling out there. Opponents clearly don't like that. At the end, Plumlee gave you a hard screen, and Biyombo also ran into you. Do you feel like they were targeting you? How do you prepare for the final stretch of the game?"

McCain replied: "That was crazy—I didn't see it coming at all. At the free-throw line, I asked him why he did that. He said, 'I've got another one coming for you.' I thought, 'Okay, let me just slide to the corner and we'll finish this game.'"
In Game 5, McCain played 33 minutes and 26 seconds, shooting 7-for-19 from the field, 3-for-9 from three-point range, and 3-for-5 from the free-throw line, finishing with 20 points and 3 rebounds.
The NBA also decided to issue a warning to Wembanyama without imposing any fine. This was because Wembanyama failed to attend the postgame interview after Game 5, which violates NBA regulations. However, since it was his first offense, the league chose to only give him a warning.
Game 6 of the series will tip off at 8:30 AM Beijing time on May 29. The Thunder currently lead the Spurs 3-2, and one more victory would send them to the NBA Finals.
