The Los Angeles Lakers have officially announced the release of multiple individuals! LeBron James' camp is waiting for the Lakers to take the initiative and offer him a contract extension.

ESPN reported today that the Los Angeles Lakers notified more than a dozen employees on Wednesday that they had been let go, as part of an organizational restructuring under the new ownership.

Last year, the Lakers weresold to businessman Mark Walter for a valuation of $10 billion. Before that, the team was run by the Buss family fornearly 50 years. Over the past few months, the Lakers' business side has seen significant changes, including the replacement of the president of business operations, the chief strategy and growth officer, and the vice president of global partnerships.

According to ESPN sources, the Lakers' round of layoffs impactedmultiple departments, including marketing, team public relations, content production, and corporate partnerships..

While the Lakers are shrinking and restructuring on the business side, they are expanding on the basketball operations side. Tony Bennett, the NCAA championship-winning coach from the University of Virginia and two-time Naismith Coach of the Year, has been hired as a draft and advisory consultant. Rohan Ramadas, who has an aerospace engineering background, has been appointed assistant general manager for strategy and data systems.

Tony Bennett is a big name: from 2009 to 2024, he served as the head coach of the University of Virginia men's basketball team, posting an overall record of 364–136, a winning percentage of 72.8%, making him the winningest coach in the program's history. He led the team to its first NCAA championship in 2019.

During a season-ending media availability earlier this month, Pelinka also mentioned that the team will hire an additional assistant general manager focused on pro scouting, draft scouting, and player development. The Lakers will invest in expanding the training facility, upgrading the biomechanics lab, performance lab, and recovery/rehabilitation lab to enhance player training and recovery infrastructure.

To put it simply: the Lakers'business side is officially undergoing restructuring, while the basketball side is pouring resources into building systems.

Of course, if LeBron James remains with the Lakers, these front-office changes still matter to us. But if LeBron leaves, then any Lakers news becomes irrelevant to us.

According toa report by ESPN's Brian Windhorst today,LeBron James and his camp have set a clear bottom line. Theyare waiting for the Lakers to approach them first; they will not go to the Lakers and say, 'We want a contract.'Just like last year, they did not actively seek an extension from the Lakers. James' side wants the Lakers to initiate the conversation and make their intentions clear.

"They want the Lakers to present a contract offer. But if the offer is below the max, they demand that the Lakers explain why—especially detailing how the money saved will be used to acquire other players."

Honestly, didn't the Lakers already signal their stance last year by not extending LeBron? If they really wanted to make a statement, why wait until now?

Now, the Lakers are trying to create cap flexibility by lowering James' salary to pursue other stars or improve the roster. They must explain to James exactly how the money will be spent and what the upgrade targets are. This isn't just about money—it's about James' voice and right to know regarding the team's future plans.

Next season might be the final year of LeBron's career. He naturally wants to fully understand the team's acquisition plans and roster strength. If the team isn't strong enough, James won't stay. He has said the only reason he continues playing is to join a championship contender and win a title.

Today, James did not post any golf updates. Perhaps he took a day off and went out on the water with his daughter. He shared a picture of her from behind, captioning it: "You never have to worry about anything! The whole world is yours. Zhuri, my little princess."

Only parents truly understand the level of confidence needed to say something like that. Being able to fully support your child and give them a worry-free life is one of the ultimate goals for many parents.
